Grown in the salty waters of Japan, Akoya pearls are produced by the pearl mollusk known as Fucata Martensii, the smallest of the pearl-producing mollusks.

A pearl is formed when a small or "irritating" object naturally enters the soft tissue of a mollusk or oyster. The consequence of the mollusk’s self-defense from the foreign body is to secrete an organic substance called nacre, which accumulates on the foreign body in millions of layers, giving rise to the pearl. The nacre is a calming substance composed of microscopic crystals of calcium carbonate, perfectly aligned with each other, so that the light that passes along the axis of each crystal is reflected and refracted by another to produce a rainbow of light and color.
